فضل عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه يتمثل في كونه من أول الملهمين في هذه الأمة المحمدية كما قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: "إن يك من أمتي أحد من المحدثين - الملهمين - فإنه عمر"، فقد ألهم الله تعالى قلبه الصواب، وأجراه على لسانه، علماً بأن الإلهام موجود في البشر عامة، وفي هذه الأمة خاصة.
قال ابن حجر رحمه الله: وقد كثر هؤلاء المحدثون بعد العصر الأول وحكمته زيادة شرف هذه الأمة بوجود أمثالهم فيها ومضاهاة بني إسرائيل في كثرة الأنبياء فلما فات هذه الأمة المحمدية كثرة الأنبياء لكون نبيهم خاتم الأنبياء عوضوا تكثير الملهمين...
وسيرة عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه تعد بحق أقوى دعائم الإيمان، فهي مليئة بالأحداث التي تدل على أنه من أمهر الصحابة في الفهم السليم لهذا الدين بفضل ما أوتي من نفاذ البصيرة ورجاجة العقل وعلمه الواسع، فإنه يعد بحق المشعل والنور الذي أضاء السبيل لفقهاء هذه الأمة، فاستطاعوا أن يجتهدوا على ضوئه وأن يسيروا في التصرف على مقتضاه في الكثير من المسائل، والتي كان يسلك بها عمر رضي الله عنه مسلك التعليل الذي يطمئن النفوس بالأحكام، ويوسع الأفق لإستخراج المجهولات.
ومعلوم أن عمر رضي الله عنه وأرضاه قبل ذلك حصل منه عدة موافقات يشير بها على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم بالأمر فينزل القرآن الكريم مطابقاً لما أشار به، ومن ذلك المحقق: اتخاذ مقام إبراهيم مصلى، وكذلك حجب نسائه رضي الله عنهم، وكذلك عدم أخذ الفدية من أسارى بدر.
