يدور هذا الكتاب حول جدلية الرمزية والنثر، بوصفها قضية ترددت كثيرًا في كتب الأدب والنقد، وأهمية النزعة الرمزية في تشكل النص الروائي، ونحاول من خلال هذه الجدلية البحث عن مقياس موضوعي؛ ليكون مرجعًا في تحديد إطار المصطلح في النثر كما تبدّى في الشعر.
ولعل هذا الكتاب يكشف لنا حقيقة الرمزية وحقيقة صناعتها، التي مرت بمراحل طويلة سبقت مرحلة وصولها إلينا في أعلى درجاتها؛ فإذا كانت الرمزية بطبيعتها ونزعتها المثالية أقرب إلى الشعر منها إلى النثر حيث كان من أهداف الرمزيين أن ينتشلوا الشعر من الصبغة النثرية التي تتجلى في الوضوح والمباشرة والتقريرية، فإن الرمزية التي قامت رسالتها الأولى على تخليص الشعر من الطابع النثري لم تلبث أن غزت النثر كما غزت الشعر، وكان غزوها للنثر – حتى في فرنسا التي نسب إليها هذا المذهب – مبكرًا جدًا.
