في هذا الكتاب مآثر قصائد نظمها بولس سلامة تحدث فيها عن ملحمة عيد الغدي وعاشوراء وعن علاقة الإمام علي بالإمام الحسين رضي الله عنهما، وربما يقول قائل ما بال بولس سلامة المسيحي يتصدى لملحمة إسلامية بحثه؟ وفي هذا يقول بولس سلامة: أجل إنني مسيحي ولكن التاريخ مشاع للعالمين.
أجل إني مسيحي ينظر من أفق رحب لا من كوة ضيقة، فيرى في غاندي الوثني قديساً، مسيحي يرى أن (لا فضل لعربي على عجمي إلا بالتقوى). مسيحي ينحني أمام عظمة رجل يهتف باسمه مئات الملايين من الناس في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها خمساً كل يوم. رجل ليس في مواليد حواء أعظم منه شأناً، وأبعد أثراً، وأخلد ذكراً. رجل أطل من غياهب الجاهلية فأطلت معه دنيا أظلها بلواء مجيد، كتب عليه بأحرف من نور: لا إله إلا الله! الله أكبر!
قد يقول قائل، ولم آثرت علياً دون سواه من أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم بهذه الملحمة؟ ولا أجيب على هذا السؤال إلا بكلمات، فالملحمة كلها جواب عليه، وسترى في سياقها بعض عظمة الرجل الذي يذكره المسلمون فيقولك (رضي الله عنه، وكرم وجهه)، ويذكره النصارى في مجالسهم فيتمثلون بحكمه ويخشعون لتقواه، ويتمثل به الزهاد في الصوامع فيزدادون زهداً وقنوتاً، وينظر إليه المفكر فيستضيء بهذا القطب الوضاء ويتطلع إليه الكاتب الألمعي فيأتم ببيانه، ويعتمده الفقيه المدره فيسترشد بأحكامه.
أما الخطيب فحسبه أن يقف على السفح، ويرفع الراس إلى هذا الطود لتنهل عليه الآيات من عل، وينطلق لسانه بالكلام العربي المبين الذي رسخ قواعده أبو الحسن، إذ دفعها إلى أبي الأسود الدؤلي فقال: أنح هذا النحو. وكان علم النحو. ويقرأ الجبان سيرة علي فتهدر في صدره النخوة وتستهويه البطولة، إذ لم تشهد الغبراء، ولم تظل السماء أشجع من ابن أبي طالب، فعلى ذلك الساعد الأجدل اعتمد الإسلام يوم كان وليداً، فعلي هو بطل بدر وخيبر والخندق وحنين ووادي الرمل والطائف واليمن. وهو المنتصر في صفين، ويوم الجمل، والنهروان، والدافع عن الرسول يوم أحد، ويقدوم السرايا ولواء المغازي.
