من نوادر التاريخ الإسلامي أن نجد دولة انهارت وسقطت، وتمكن أحد من إعادة إحيائها من جديد في منطقة أخرى تبعد عنها آلاف الأميال، كما حدث للدولة الأموية في دمشق، التي استطاع عبد الرحمن بن معاوية المعروف بـ "الداخل"، بعثها في الأندلس منذ سنة 138ه / 755م، ولم يمر على سقوطها في المشرق سوى ست سنوات، كما لم يسبق في التاريخ ايضاً لدولة ضاربة في الحضارة مثل الدولة الأموية في الأندلس، أن تفككت أواصرها الداخلية وانتثرت بنيها السياسية إلى أجزاء مستقلة مثلما حصل في الأندلس خلال القرن الخامس الهجري / الحادي عشر الميلادي.
يسلّط هذا الكتاب الضوء على عصر ملوك الطوائف للفترة (422-478ه / 1031-1085م) ويتتبع تاريخ الأسر الحاكمة التي ملكت تلك الدول، والحروب التي شهدتها، وما نجم عنها من دويلات، يحكمها ملك، أو أمير، أو والي، تبعاً لحجم رقعة الأرض التي يملكها. هذا على المستوى السياسي، أما على المستوى الإجتماعي، فكان التمزق، بفعل العناصر المختلفة التي تألف منها المجتمع الأندلسي، فقد استبد البربر والصقالبة على الخلافة الأموية، وتقاسمت الأسر القبلية وقادتها أشلاء الدولة، التي كان زوالها مع الواقع بداية الصراع فيما بينها.
يتألف الكتاب من أربعة فصول على النحو الآتي:
الفصل الأول: دول ملوك الطوائف (422-478ه / 1031-1085م) .
الفصل الثاني: إستنجاد ملوك الطوائف بالمرابطين في المغرب، الأندلس في ظل حكم المرابطين (479-542ه / 1086-1146م).
الفصل الثالث: الموحدون وضياع الأندلس باستثناء غرناطة (542-641ه / 1146-1242م).
الفصل الرابع: مملكة غرناطة وسقوط الأندلس (635-897ه / 1237-1492م).
