جعل الخديوي إسماعيل من أحتفالات أفتتاح قناة السويس للملاحة حدثاً عالمياً, وكلف الرسام المشهور "إدوارد ريو" بإعداد كتاب يهديه للملوك وعظماء المدعوين الذين حضروا الأحتفالات.
ولم يقتصر كتاب الإهداء علي سرد تاريخ حفر القناة, والصعوبات التي تم التغلب عليها في البداية بأيدي العمال المصريين قبل أن يتم أبتكار آلات حديثة أستخدمت لأول مرة علي أرض مصر, وقد تضمن الكتاب أربعين لوحة ألوان مائية رسمها "ريو" تذكر الرؤوس المتوجة بحفلات بهرتهم بروعتها ودقة تنظيمها, وقد لاءم الفنان "ريو" بين اللوحات التي رسمها أثناء رحلة الملوك عبر الخليج, وبين ما كتبه المؤرخان "جيستاف نيقول" و "ماريوس فونتان" عن ملحمة قناة السويس.
ويبرز الكتاب دخول الأسطول البحري قناة السويس, وفرحة الجماهير التي أصطفت علي ضفتي القناة, كما يبرز توافد قبائل العرب التي جاءت من كل الجهات بالجمال والخيول, ونصبت الخيام, وشاركت في حفل الفروسية الرائع, كما يصف الكتاب المدن الحديثة التي ولدت في الصحراء بشوارعها الواسعة, ومبانيها الجميلة ذات النوافذ والشرفات المزينة بالأعلام, لقد أراد حاكم مصر المستنير بهذا الكتاب توثيق حدث فريد ليحتل مكانة مرموقة في سجل ذاكرة العالم.
ويصدر المركز القومي للترجمة هذا الكتاب التراثي النادر إحياءً لذكري أفتتاح قناة السويس, هذا المشروع العملاق الذي يعد أمتداداً لمنجزات الإنسان المصري, والتي تتجاوز العصور.
