مصنف هذا الكتاب هو أحمد بن عبد الله بن أحمد بن إسحاق بن موسى بن مهران، الملقب بأبي نعيم الأصبهاني، الحافظ الكبير، ذو التصانيف المفيدة، الكثيرة الشهيرة، دلت على اتساع رواتبه، وكثرة مشايخه وقوة إطلاعه على مخارج الحديث، وتشعب طرقه. وأما كتابه "معرفة الصحابة" فقد ألفه ليقف القارئ من خلاله على معرفة صفوة الصحابة، والمشهورين ممن حوت أسماءهم وأذكارهم ديوان المورثين، وولادتهم، ووفاتهم، وتاريخ الحفاظ المتقنين ممن ثبتت له من الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم رواية أو صحت له صحبته وولاته.
بدأ المؤلف كتابه بأخبار في مناقب الصحابة ومراتبهم مقدما من ثمّ ذكر العشرة المشهود لهم بالجنة، ومتبعا بمن وافق اسمه اسم الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم رقم مرتبا أسماء الباقين على ترتيب حروف المعجم ومقتصرا من جملتها ما بلغ منهم على حديث أو حديثين فأكثر مع ما ينضم إليه من ذكر المولد والسن والوفاة في من لم يقع له حديث فيه له ذكر أو روي له خبر ذكره بعد الغاء الموضوعات مما لا حقيقة له، ولم يشتمل على ذكره مسانيد الأئمة والإثبات، ولا دونته تواريخ الحفاظ. وقد تمّ تحقيق مصنف هذا الكتاب وكان العمل فيه على النحو التالي: ضبط النص وتقديمه، تخريج الأحاديث والحكم عليها حسب القواعد المعمول بها عند العلماء، بيان غريب الحديث، ذكر مصادر ترجمة صاحب الترجمة، عمل الفهارس وللازمة، عمل مقدمة مفيدة فيها تعريف الصحابي، والكتب المؤلفة في هذه الموضوع وصف المخطوطات وتوثيق الكتاب لمؤلفه، ترجمة أبي منصور الديلمي، وأبي علي الحداد.
