بين أيدينا كتاب يتناول المؤسسة المباركة في البلاد التونسية جامع الزيتونة ألفه الشيخ "محمد بن عثمان السنوسي" فأدى بتأليفه هذا بعض الواجب حيث تناول ترجمة رجاله بتعريف أظهر فيه ما قاموا به من نشر للمعرفة في حلقة من حلقات تونس التاريخية، وسلك فيه مسلكاً رصيناً مؤدياً به بعض الواجب نحو السلف. وقد قصد من تأليفه التعريف بفقهاء وقضاة الدولة الحسينية، وهو يشير لهذا في قوله: "وربما طالعته من أخبار الممالك ورجالها، وتطور الدول وأحوالها، حملتني الغيرة الوطنية، والحمية العلمية على التعريف بعلماء الشريعة الحنفية في الحاضرة التونسية، من مبدأ الدولة الحسينية لا زالت تاج جبين هاته البلاد، على مرور الآباد حيث رأيت أن تطاول الأعصار، كاد أن يطمس ما لعلمائها من محاسن الآثار ولما كان أصحاب الخطط الشرعية بين مفتين وقضاة، من الحنفية والمالكية أصحاب الخلال المرتضاة، تعين تقسيمهم إلى أربعة أقسام.
فالمقصود هو التعريف بعلماء المذهبين المالكي والحنفي من قضاة ومفتين، وبدا له أن يقوم على تلك الأقسام الأربعة قسماً عرف فيه بالأئمة. وهكذا فقد حصر المصنف "مباحث" كتابه فيما يلي: المقدمة في التعريف بالملوك الحسينيين: القسم الأول، في التعريف بأئمة جامع الزيتونة وابتداء بولاية الشيخ إبراهيم بن عبد الرحيم المتوفى سنة 733، وختم هذا القسم بترجمة الشيخ محمد بن أحمد الشريف. القسم الثاني، خصه بتراجم المفاتي الحنفية وابتداء بترجمة رمضان أفندي، وختم هذا القسم بترجمة المفتي الشيخ حسنونة عباس، وكتب ترجمته وهو على قيد الحياة. القسم الثالث، خصصه لتراجم المفاتي المالكية ذاكراً أن الافتاء كان متصلاً بإمامة جامع الزيتونة ثم انفصل الإفتاء عن إمامة الزيتونة. وقدم هذا القسم بحثاً يتعلق بالإفتاء المالكي في تونس، وأول من ترجم له ترجمة موسعة الشيخ أبو الفضل المسراتي المتوفي سنة 1085, وختم هذا الفصل بترجمة الشيخ أحمد بن معدة الشريف.
أما القسم الرابع فأفرده لتراجم القضاة الحنفية، حيث ابتدأ بأول قاضي حنفي قدم من بلاد الخلافة العثمانية، وهو علي أفندي، وختم هذا القسم بترجمة الشيخ محمد بن مصطفى بن حسين بيرم. وأخيراً خصص المصنف القسم الخامس لذكر تاريخ القضاة بإفريقيا، حيث ذكر تراجم القضاة من المالكية في العهد الحسيني.
