ومن أكثر العلوم رواجاً في العصور المتقدمة علمُ الحديث بفروعه الكثيرة، حتى إنك لتجد مصنفات هذا العلم تستحوذ على السواد الأعظم منها، فمِنْ كُتُبِ متونِ الحديث، إلى الأجزاءِ الحديثية، إلى كتب الرجال والجرح والتعـديل، إلى كتـب العـلل، فمصطلـح الحديـث، فغريبـه فأحكامه… وهكذا لا تكاد ترى لهذه السلسلة من نهاية.
ومن فروع علم الحديـث المهمـة علم الرجـال، أو علم الجـرح والتعـديل، ذلك الفـن الذي تخصَّص في دراسة أحوال الرواة، وذِكْـرِ مناقبهم، والحُكْمِ عليهم بمقياس العدالة والضبط.
ومن أشهـر كتب الرجـال التي ظهـرت في القـرن الثامن الهجري كتاب: ’تهذيب الكمال‘ للحافظ المِزِّيِّ، الذي هذبه من كتاب ’الكمال في أسماء الرجال‘ للحافظ عبد الغني المقدسي، والذي وضعه المقدسي بدوره في تراجم رواة الأئمة الستة أصحاب الكتب المشهورة.
ومن كتاب المِزِّيِّ تسلسلت مؤلفات جليلة، وبنيت عليه مصنفات حديثيـة كثيرة، فوضع الذهبيُّ كتابه ’تذهيب التهذيب‘، ثم اختصره في كتابه: ’الكاشف‘، كما اختصر الخزرجيُّ ’التذهيب‘ في كتابه: ’خلاصة تذهيب تهذيب الكمال‘.
كما جاء الحافـظ ابن حجر فوضع كتابـه المشهـور: ’تهذيـب التهذيب‘، ثم اختصره في كتابه الموجز المفيد: ’تقريب التهذيب‘. وهكذا لقي رجالُ الأئمة الستة عنايةً كبيرة بين المحدثين، لمكانة الكتب الستـة وشهرتهـا بين المسلمين، حتى أضحت أشهر كتب السنة تقريباً.
والكتاب الذي بين أيدينا داخل في هذه السلسلة، فهو منظومة وزنها إمام كبير، هو ابن بَرْدِسَ البَعْلَبكِّي (أو البَعْلي)، جمعَ فيها من بين رواة الحديـث الرجالَ الذين اتفق الأئمـة الستة على إخراج حديثهم، حيث نظمهم ورتبهم، واجتهد في سرد أسمائهم وأنسابهم وألقابهم في أبيات موزونة منظومة.
