إن أهمية هذا الكتاب تأتى من أهمية كتاب المنهل الصافى الذى هو أحد المعاجم التاريخية الذى يضم بين دفتيه تراجم لما يقرب من ثلاثة آلاف علم من الخلفاء والملوك والسلاطين والأمراء والوزراء. والقواد والعلماء، والأدباء والكتاب، والشعراء والخطباء، والمؤرخين والأطباء، والمهندسين والخطاطين، وأعيان الدولة من التجار وأرباب المهن المختلفة ممن عاشوا فى مصر أو فى الشام ومن عاصرهم من أهل الحجاز واليمن والعراق، ورجالات التتار وبلاد الغرب والأندلس، وبعض فضليات النساء وشهيراتهن.
يقول مؤلفه فى تقديمه "أما بعد فلما كان من فى الأعصار الخالية، والقرون الماضية وقع لهم وقائع وسير، وحوادث لها أثر، شاع بها التاريخ والسمر، وتخاطب الأيام بذلك الأنام، من تأخر عصره من الأقوام، بأفواه المحابر وألسن الأقلام، فيطالعها كأنه مجالسهم، ويتأمل ما فيها كأنه مؤانسهم، ليقتدى منهم بجميل الخصال، ونبيل المآثر والفعال، ويتجنب ما صدر عنهم من قبيح الخلال، وكنت قد اطلعت على نبذة من سيرهم وأخبارهم، ووقفت فى كتب التواريخ على الكثير من آثارهم، فحملنى ذلك على سلوك هذه المسالك، وإثبات شئ من أخبار أمم الممالك، غير مستدعى إلى ذلك من أحد أعيان الزمان"
