اهتم العرب بتثبيت الإنسان ومعهم شعوب أخرى كاليونان والفرس والرومان والهنود والصينيون واليابانيون وغيرهم، فقد اهتموا لشجرات أنسابهم، وذلك ما يفعله اليوم الأوروبيون والأمريكيون تحت وطأة الاهتمام بالدراسات التراثية. والمباهاة بالنسب كذلك لم تكن الأنساب مختصرة بالعرب، وإنما تشاركهم في ذلك أمم أحرى،ولقد كان النسب في القبلية قديماً لا يقل أهمية عن (الجنسية) أو ( المواطنة) في الأمم المعاصرة، ذلك لأن القبلية في ذلك الوقت كانت تمثل دولة قائمة بذاتها لها كيانها الخاص بها، ولها علاقاتها مع القبائل الأخرى بشكل أو بآخر بحسب الظروف والمصالح المتعارف عليها آنئذٍ. ومن المنسابين الثقاة عند الذين اشتهروا عند العرب بحفظ الانساب، والاهتمام بها، والذين كانوا مراجع يعتمدون عليهم عند الاختلاف في قضايا النسب أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه وعقيل بن ابي طالب وحبير بن مطعمبن عدي القرشي، وأبو الكناس الكندي، وقتاوة بن دعامة السدوسي، وعيسى بن يزيد الكناني وشرقي بن قطامي، وهؤلاء كان لهم شأن عظيم لأنهم كانوا يمثلون المصادر الأصلية للأنساب. ضمن هذا الإطار يأتي كتاب "العشائر الزبيدية في العراق" من محاولة لإجراء مسح شامل هذه العائلة المتواجدة في العراق مع ذكر متفرعاتها والعائلات الملحقة بها، مع إشارة من جانب المؤلف لبيان صلاتهم بالقحطانيين.
