هذا الكتاب كاسمه؛ قلادةٌ وضعها مؤلِّفها العلامة الطيب بامخرمة على نحر التاريخ؛ ليعرض لنا التاريخ في أجلى صوره ووقائعه، تاريخَ بلاد من أعرق البلدان، وتاريخ رجال أعلام سطروا بحياتهم أمجاداً لا ينساها التاريخ، على شتى اختصاصاتهم، فكانوا حقيقةً كما سماهم المؤلف: أعيان الدهر .
لقد دون المؤلف في هذا الكتاب تراجمات رجال من العالم الإسلامي أجمع، وسجل بمداده أحداثاً وقعت في بلاد اليمن وما حولها، وأخبر عن أعلامها ما لا تجده مجموعاً في كتاب، بل ولا مدوناً في ديوان أو مخبوءاً في سرداب، وذلك لأن المؤلف قد تخصص في هذا الفن وأعطاه من عمره زهرته، وجمع له من المصادر ما لا تسمع به عند غيره لندرته .
وقد حوى هذا الكتاب ـ ولا سيما في مجلديه الأخيرين ـ تراجمات أعيان كبار لم يحبوا الظهور، وخفي ذكرهم في ثنايا السطور، فقام المؤلف فوفاهم حقهم، وأبرز للأجيال فضلهم . ورغم أنه في كثير من جوانب الكتاب لم يكن إلا ملخصاً أو ناقلاً من المراجع القديمة .. إلا أن حاسة المؤلف النقدية قد برزت في مواضع عدة من كتابه، في تحقيق تاريخٍ، أو نقد حدثٍ، أو تصحيح معلومةٍ .وقد سلك المؤلف مهيع التوسط بين الإطناب الممل والإيجاز المخل، ورتبه على السنين مبتدئاً بأول سنة من الهجرة النبوية، على صاحبها أطيب الصلوات والتسليمات المباركة الزكية، حتى وصل إلى عصره، وترجم لأبناء دهره .
