لم يكن هذا الكتاب دفاعاً عن الذين عذبوا ولا قدحًا فيمن عذب، على أهمية الفعليين، فالتعذيب أمر مرفوض صرعًا وقانونًا وصاحبه يكون مذمومًا مدحورًا في الدنيا والآخرة، إنما الهدف تقييم مرحلة تاريخية وتوثيق الغبن الذي وقع على بعض السجناء السياسيين عيدًا عن أفعالهم وممارستهم بغض النظر عن أخطائهم، فالكتاب ليس لمناقشة أفكار هؤلاء، فتعذيبهم لا يبرره خطأ البعض منهم، ولتوثيق هذه الشهادات نوعنا في السجناء مع اختلاف أيديولوجيتهم والسجون التي حبسوا فيها، وحتى يتم توثيق ذلك لم نترك المجال للسجين إلا أن يتحدث عن تجربته الشخصية والتعذيب الذي وقع عليه وإن كان شاهد عيان على من قتل جراء العذيب أمام عينه، لأنه بمثابة المصدر الوحيد لسرد وقائع التعذيب التي أفضت إلى الموت.
يحوي الكتاب بين دفتيه ما قد ينفيه البعض أو لا يستوعبه، وما لا يصدقه البعض الآخر، ولأننا لم نرد غير الحقيقة فقد قمنا بتوثيق شهادات التعذيب دون تدخل إلا في صياغتها بعد ان سمعناها من أصحابها ثم عرضناها ثانية عليهم إمعاناً في التدقيق وحتى لا نتهم بالتهويل أو التهوين بشأن ما جرى لهم، فهم الشهود الوحيدون على هذه الأحداث، تنشابهت بعض وقائع التعذيب واضطررنا لنقلها كما هي كدليل جديد على التوثيق، وهو ما ينفي شبه اتفاق السجناء، اخترنا عينة السجناء السياسيين التي عرضنا شهادتهم من سجون مختلفة ومدن لا يعرف بعضهم بعضًا وحرصنا أن يدلي من يزال سجينًا بشهادته كما أدلى من أصبح حرًا بشهادته رجالًا ونساء شبابًا وشيوخًا، فالتنوع شكل جديد من التوثيق ينفي الإجماع على الكذب، عرضنا هذه الشهادات في الشكل القصصي المحبب إلى الإنسان في السرد، فجاءت الشهادات على لسان أصحابها كباب جديد في التوثيق، مدركين أن الباب سوف يظل مفتوحًا أمام عرض صرخات وأنات هؤلاء المظلومين.
