تعد دراسة مصنفات المؤرخين العرب المسلمين، ونتاجاتهم في مجال الكتابة التاريخية واحدةً من أكثر الدراسات أهمية في تحديد سمات التأريخ العربي الإسلامي، وترسيخ قواعد منهج البحث التاريخي العربي، فهذه الدراسات تستوجب التعرف إلى مناهج المؤرخين وأساليبهم في الكتابة ومواردهم ومصنفاتهم، وبيان نتائجهم في الحياة الفكرية خلال مراحل التأريخ العربي الإسلامي.
لذلك، فإن هذه الدراسة الموسومة بــ(السخاوي وكتابة الضوء اللامع موارده ومنهجه) تهدف إلى تسليط الضوء على حياة ومصنفات واحد من العلماء العرب المسلمين البارزين ممن شاركوا في الحياة الفكرية والثقافية في النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع الهجري/ الخامس عشر الميلادي.
وتأتي أهمية هذا الموضوع من كون السخاوي واحداً من أبرز العلماء والمفكرين العرب خلال النصف الثاني من ذلك القرن، الذي نبغ في مجالات علمية عدة، كالحديث والفقه والتأريخ وغيرها، كما أن كتابه الضوء اللامع - موضوع الدراسة - يعد أشهر وأوسع مؤلفات كتب التراجم، التي صنفت في ذلك العصر بفضل ما تميز به من مميزات إذ كونه كتاباً موسوعياً لإحتوائه على عدد كبير من التراجم المختلفة من البلدان والقبائل والأجداد والعلوم والمهن والصنائع وغيرها...
فضلاً عن كونه من أشهر مؤلفات السخاوي، فهو مؤلف جامع للحوادث والتراجم، التي تعد جزءاً أساسياً في التأريخ ولها أهمية في دراسته.
وبناءً على ذلك فقد اشتملت الرسالة على خمسة فصول وخاتمة، تضمن الفصل الأول دراسة عصر السخاوي من الناحية السياسية والفكرية من أجل توضيح صورة العصر الذي عاش فيه هذا المؤرخ الجليل، والفصل الثاني خصص لدراسة سيرته، أما الفصل الثالث فقد عُرض فيه الإطار المنهجي الذي رسمه السخاوي لكتابه (الضوء اللامع)، بدءاً من اسم الكتاب، وتأريخ تأليفه، ودوافع التأليف، وخطته في الكتاب وإنتهاءً بمميزاته، ثم تناول الفصل الرابع موارد السخاوي في كتابه (الضوء اللامع)، واعتنى الفصل الخامس بالتعريف بمحتويات الكتاب وقسم إلى جوانب عدة منها ما يخص الجانب التأريخي، والجانب الفكري والإقتصادي والعمراني وغيرها من الجوانب، أما الخاتمة فقد تناولت بإيجاز أهم ما خلص إليه هذا البحث.
