بأدوات "المعارضة الساخرة" يضع بريشت شكل ومضمون مسرحيته هذه في صراع، بحيث يكشف كل طرف منها الطرف الآخر: الشكل يكشف للقارئ والمشاهد كشيء مضحك لا معقول وزائف في حين أن المضمون يعرّي أسلوب حياة البورجوازية الامبريالية المعاصرة في كافة جوانب تدهورها ووحشيتها وتهتكها الأخلاقي وعمقها.
وهكذا فإن "المعارضة الساخرة" لدى بريشت تغرّب المادة المعالجة، وفي انسجام تام مع نظرية المسرح الملحمي نجدها تخدم مهمة شحذ قدرة المراقبة والمتابعة لدى المشاهد وتوقظ حسه النقدي. إن جان دارك في هذه المسرحية، من حيث وقائع الحدث، هي "عذراء أورليانز" الكاتب شيلر، ولكنها في الوقت نفسه شخصية أخرى، فهي لدى شيلر تناصر الضعفاء والمسحوقين وتنتصر عدة انتصارات إلى أن تستشهد، فتكلل بطلة وقديسة. أما عند بريثت، فإن جميع انتصاراتها شكلية زائفة وكانت عملياً لصالح أرباب العمل ضد العمال، الذين تريد جان دارك بكل جوانحها أن تشاركهم مصيرهم وتخفف من بؤسهم. لكنها نتيجة الأحكام الدينية المسبقة التي تسيطر على تفكيرها وتسيره، ترتكب الخطأ تلو الخطأ إلى أن تقي لحظة موتها الطريق الحقيقي لخلاص المسحوقين، وعندما تفتح فمها لتعلنه أمام الفقراء يخنقها التجار والمتاجرون بأعلام التبجيل والقداسة. لقد تحرك بين أيديهم إلى سلعة أخرى، تساهم في استمرارهم في مراكزهم وفي تحكمهم بمصائر العمال والكادحين ويمكن القول بأنه كثيراً ما اتهمت هذه المسرحية بأنها أسيرة فترة نشوئها، ولذا فقد فقدت أهميتها ومعاصرتها، لكن وبنظرة سريعة إلى أزمات العالم الرأسمالي الإمبريالى من حولنا وبنظرة أخرى إلى موجات الردة الدينية في الغرب بحثاً عن الخلاص من عالم لم يعد معقولاً أو قابلاً للعيش، يمكن إدراك أهمية هذه المسرحية طالما بقي الصراع قائماً بين المستغلين والمستغلين.
