يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب: إن معالم شخصية زيد مستمدة من ملامح الشخصية المتميزة لأهل البيت وخطهم السياسي والعقائدي والاجتماعي، حيث سار في حياته طبق تلك المبادئ الربانية، والثورية حتى في أصعب مراحل ثورته وذلك حين عرض عليه عبيد الكوفة المشاركة في الثورة فرفض ذلك احتراماً لحق ساداتهم، كما رفض عرض نساء الكوفة المشاركة في الثورة (...) فالحديث عن شخصية زيد يعني الحديث عن اهل البيت عليهم السلام ودورهم في تربية المجتمع على القيم الثورية الاسلامية الأصيلة...
يضم الكتاب سبعة فصول: درس الفصل الأول شخصية زيد بن علي، وعرض الفصل الثاني الملامح العامة لعصر الثورة من خلال: طبيعة الحكم الأموي ونشوء المذاهب الفكرية والسياسية فيما بعد، أما الفصل الثالي فتحدث عن دوافع الثورة وأهدافها، وكشف الفصل الرابع وقائع الثورة، وتقصى الفصل الخامس عوامل فشل الثورة، واختص الفصل السادس بتعييم الثورة، ويأتي الفصل السابع والأخير ليعرض معاني الثورة عند أهل البيت من خلال: نظرية قيادة الإمام، وموقف الإمام الصادق عليه السلام من ثورة زيد بن علي رضي الله عنه.
