فى 17 يوليو 2005 وهو بالمناسبة يصادف يوم تقلد الرئيس على عبد الله صالح رئاستة لليمن الشمالي فى 1978م تحدث الرئيس عن رغبته فى اعتزال الرئاسة بعد أن مل السلطة ومله الشعب.. وأعلن عن عدم ترشيحه للانتخابات الرئاسية القادمة فى سبتمبر2006م. إعلانه كان بمثابة مفاجأة للجميع، والغالبية أيدت القرار واعتبرته خطوة إيجابية من الرئيس صالح فى اختراق دائرة التوابيت الرئاسية العربية حيث أنه بذلك يكرس لمفهوم جديد لم تألفه الأمة العربية عبر تاريخها الطويل، ولكن ما كل الأمانى تتحقق، فالزعيم العربى لايترك كرسى الزعامة إلا محمولاً بالنعش ومصحوبا بملايين اللعنات.. فقط واحد من شذ عن عن القاعدة حينما شيعته ملايين العرب فى كل مدينة عربية ونعته وترحمت عليه وبكت من فقدانه فقط هو ذاك الزعيم الخالد جمال عبد الناصر.
