"كارمن" هو إحدى روائع قصص الأوبرا العالمية للكاتب الفرنسي بروسيير مربميه، الذي يرويها مستخدماً روايتين اثنتين إحداهما هو نفسه، حين يحدثنا عن إحدى رحلاته التي التقى فيها بقاطع طريق مصادفة في إحدى الطرق، فتنشأ بينهما صداقة، ومن خلال هذه الصداقة يكتشف الراوي أن رفيق دربه لم يكن سوى لص شهير يدعى جوزيه نافارو والشرطة تلاحقه. بعد ذلك، سوف يلتقي الراوي بفتاة غجرية هي كارفتيسيا يعجب بها وتشاء المصادفات أن تكون هي نفسها عشيقة اللص الشهير الفار. وتقوده إلى أحد المنازل بحجة أنها تريد قراءة طالعه، ولكنها تسرق ساعته. يتحرك السرد قدماً إلى الأمام ويعود الراوي مرة ثانية إلى قرطبة ليفاجأ بأن الشرطة وجدت ساعته، وأن اللص نافارو بات نزيل السجن ينتظر الإعدام. وهنا تبدأ قصة ثانية يرويها اللص نفسه للكاتب – الراوي – الرحالة. ويبدأ من اللحظة التي يرى فيها كارمن، بالهيئة الجميلة، التي تجعله يفتتن بها، وهي تبالغ في إغوائه، وتقوده لارتكاب جنحة بحق وظيفته حين يسهل أمر فرارها بعد أن يقبض عليها متلبسة بجرم محاولة قتل إحدى النساء. ومرة بعد مرة يزداد تورط الشرطي في مخالفة القانون حتى يهرب من عمله ويلتحق بعصابتها ليظل قريباً منها. بعد ذلك يطلب الزواج ولكنها ترفض، فيهددها بالقتل، ولكنها تصر على التمسك برأيها، حريتها أو حياتها. وعندئذ يسحب الشرطي سكينه، ويطعنها في صدرها، فيقتلها، ويدفنها، باكياً " أنا .. أنا .. حبيبتي كارمن، قتلتها بيدي هاتين الإثنتين، بهاتين اليدين .. كارمن، آن، حبيبتي كارمن ... "
