إننا نحمل طفولتنا أينما حللنا، ولها الأثر الأكبر على شخصيتنا وتوجهاتنا. كنت في مرحلة الطفولة أستمع بشغف وخشوع إلى قصص الوالدة الحنون الغنية بآثار الماضي وقصص الحوريات والجنيات وأساطير الأبطال. أحلم بالأسفار البعيدة وأسرار القبائل وعادات البلدان. لقد كانت الوالدة الملهم الأول الذي زرع فينا هوى الأسفار، وهي تحكي لنا قصصاً، لا ندري إن كانت قد ارتجلتها أو نقلتها عن الأولين. وفي بيئة كهذه أنى لنا ألا نتطلع إلى تقليد الرحالة الأقدمين ومنهم العراقي الياس الموصلي أو ابن بطوطة، ثم ألا يُبحر في عروق كل منا سندباد صوب آفاق لاحدود لها؟
الحياة مسرحية، هزلية كانت أو مأساوية، نحن أبطالها، وكذلك الأمر بالنسبة إلى عالم الغاب، فهو حلبة صراع وميدان وغنى مليئان بالمفاجأت، أبطالهما سكنة البراري، وهما مرآة عاكسة لمجتمعاتنا، فيهما ومنهما الدروس والعبر. ، وتخاطب مشاعرنا وأحاسيسنا، ذلك أنها تتناول الطبيعة البشرية بكل ما تحمل من نفاق وقسوة وبطش وكذب وأنانية. وفي الغاب، تماماً كما في مجلس الأمن الدولي، فالقوة هي الحق. ولا حاجة هنا لتحليلات سياسية ودراسات معمقة حول جغرافية أرض المعارك والتطرق إلى النظريات الجيوسياسية أو إلى ثرثرات بليدة، لنفهم سبب عدم مغادرة السعادين والظباء بعضها البعض. فالأولى نظرها ثاقب حاد تعلن الإنذار بالخطر الداهم، والثانية مرهفة السمع. وهكذا فقد أصبح اتحادهم قوة. والحقيقة نحن لا نفهم كيف نصب الإنسان نفسه سيداً على الكون، عندما نرى أن بعض الحيوانات أرحم من بني البشر، وهي لا تعرف مثلاً المحسوبيات والانتهازية والكذب، ولا تتفنن في أساليب التعذيب والقتل ، وعندما نكتشف أن للأفاعي وللتماسيح عطفاً وحناناً خاصا أيضا .
