لم يجتمع لأحد من الصحابة ما اجتمع للإمام علي من فضائل وخصائص ميزه الله بها عن سائر الناس، فهو مدينة العلم، وقد أجمعت الأمة على صحة حديث (أنا مدينة العلم وعلي بابها) وقد رواه أهل الآثار. ومن مختصات أمير المؤمنين عليه السلام أنه قال سلوني قبل أن تفقدوني، إذ كان يكرر هذا الأمر حثاً على المسلمين للاستفادة من علمه. وما قاله أحد غيره إلا افتضح.
وهذا الكتاب يحوي أسرار عجيبة وأخبار غريبة عن مناقب الإمام علي ومعاجزه في حياته ومماته. ففيه إخبار الإمام علي عليه السلام عن الذرة، وعن نهاية اليهود وبشائر الكتب السماوية بولايته. إضافة إلى قصته تكريم الأمم المتحدة له عليه السلام حول عهده لمالك الأشتر عندما ولاه على مصر وإخباره عن نشوء دولة للأكراد في شمال العراق وإخباره بالغيب مع كراماته التي ظهرت عند ضريحه المقدس ومناظراته واحتجاجاته على خصومه وشهادات العظماء فيه عليه السلام، كما يذكر الكتاب بعض أسرار جفره إضافة إلى أشعاره ووصاياه ورسائله وخطبه النادرة كالشقشقية وخطبة الدهور، والخطبة الخالية من الألف والخطبة الخالية من النقط.
