يتناول هذا الكتاب موضوعاً من أهم موضوعات الحياة. ذلك هو النشاط الاقتصادي الذي يقوم به الإنسان من أجل إشباع حاجاته المادية من إنتاج السلع النادرة والخدمات، والتي بها تتحول المادة إلى أغذية وأدوات.
ويستهدف الكتاب تبيان أن النشاط الاقتصادي لا يقف منعزلاً عن الأنشطة الأخرى، بل هو يمتد بالضرورة إلى الجوانب الإجتماعية، ذلك أن الجوانب المادية من الحياة الاقتصادية ترتبط ارتباطاً وثيقاً بالجوانب الإجتماعية.
إن النشاط الاقتصادي يحتاج إلى مجالات الخدمة الإجتماعية مثل رعاية الطفولة والأمومة ورعاية المسنين والرعاية الطبية، وخدمات التعليم والإسكان، فضلاً عن تشريعات العمل ورعاية تشغيل النساء والأحداث. ولذا تقوم الحكومات بمثل هذه المهام. كما تقوم المنظمات غير الحكومية كالجمعيات الخيرية والنقابات العمالية والمؤسسات الإجتماعية الخاصة بالقيام بما لم تؤده المنظمات الحكومية.
وهكذا تبدو أهمية هذا الكتاب في أنه يبرز ارتباط الظاهرة الاقتصادية بغيرها من الظواهر الإجتماعية الأخرى، وينقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة أبواب هى: "الاقتصاد، علاقة علم الاقتصاد بالعلوم الإجتماعية الأخرى وأخيراً المدارس الفكرية في علم الإجتماع الإقتصادي".
