فن كتابة الرسائل فن قديم عرفته معظم الحضارات القديمة في صورته المعروفة نثراً، كما أنه فن ازدهر على يد السوفسطائيين سادة الريتوريقا، وظل يتطور بعدهم بانتظام، وربما كانت رسائل الفيلسوف إبقوروس (=أبيقور) من أفضل الأمثلة على هذا. غير أن فن الرسالة الأدبية المنظومة شعراً يظل غرضاً له جاذبيته الخاصة وتفرده بين سائر الفنون الأخرى، خصوصاً حينما ينبري للكتابة فيه شاعر متمرس حصيف مثل هوراتيوس، وأعتقد أنه لا يوجد فن أدبي أخر بوسعه أن يمنح الكاتب فرصة التعبير عن مكنون خلجات صدره، وعن أدق ما يجول بفكره من أسرار ومشاعر أفضل من فن كتابة الرسالة الأدبية. فهو بمثابة كيان يدق مع دقات القلب الرتيبة، ويكاد يمتزج بدم الكاتب، ويختلط مع عصارة فكره، وكأنه توحد معه أو كاد.
وفي الوقت نفسه لا يوجد موضوع بعينه أو مجال محدد يمكن فرضه على مؤلف الرسالة الأدبية، فإن لهذا المؤلف أن يسبح بفكره حيث شاء، وإن من حقه أن يختار لنفسه وبنفسه الميدان الذي يجب أن يرتاده بغير رقيب ولا حسيب. كما أن فن الرسالة الأدبية يتيح الفرصة للمؤلف كي يفيد من حنكته وخبرته التي تتراكم كلما خط الشيب شعره، وكلما اكتسب المقدرة الباهرة على التعبير عن مكنونات فؤاده أو شطحات فكره، بمثل ما تيسر للشاعر هوراتيوس الذي عركه الزمان وأنضجته التجارب وحنكته السنون.
وإني لعلى ثقة من أن القراء الأعزاء سوف يسعدون بلا شك أيما سعادة وهم يطوفون مع رسائل هذا الكتاب التي يصل عددها إلى عشرين رسالة، فيعيشون وهم يطالعونها مع أفكار قدامى الرومان، ويقفون على اهتماماتهم وعلى ما يضعونه موضع الصدارة من أمور، وربما يندهش القارئ الكريم لذلك الطابع الإنساني الخالد الذي يوحد بين مشاعر البشر ومشاربهم وميولهم وأهوائهم، رغم تعاقب القرون التي تفصل بيننا وبين الرومان، ورغم اختلاف الجنس والعصر واللغة والدين.
