كثيرا ما يعتبر الماكياج صلة ضرورية للإخراج المسرحى. ويجهل معظم الممثلين والمخرجين فى داخل برودواى broadway وخارجها تلك الإمكانيات الضخمة التى يسهم بها الماكياج فى كمال الإخراج, ولكنهم يعتبرونه سلسلة من القوانين تتبع ميكانيكيا بطريقة عمياء وبكل تأكيد يجب ألا يكون الماكياج مجموعة قوانين أو معادلات رمزية أو قواعد روتينية. غير أن الماكياج كما يدرس عادة هو هكذا: هناك قاعدة للسن المتوسطة وأخرى للكهولة والشيخوخة, كما أن هناك قاعدة لسكان إيرلندة وأخرى للندل "الجرسونات". مثل هذا الماكياج يجعل الممثل يتخبط فى كثير من الأخطاء, ومن ناحية أخرى يصبح إهانة للمتفرجين.
من الأهمية بمكان عند استعمال هذا الكتاب للدراسة أن يفهم كل باب فهما تاما وتستوعب كل مواده استيعابا تفصيليا قبل الانتقال إلى الباب الذى يليه. وإنه لمن المغرى دائما أن نقفز إلى الناحية العملية فى الماكياج وخصوصا العمل الراقى لتكوين الشخصيات, ولكن تجب مقاومة هذا الإغراء فى إصرار لأن الدراسة فى تلك النصوص مبنية على فهم المبادئ وليس على حفظ القواعد. وفهم هذه المبادئ أساسى وضرورى للماكياج الخيالى البارع.
وليس من المهم أن تكون الأدوات كثيرة أوقليلة فنجاح الماكياج رهن بتنفيذه فى سيطرة مهنية كاملة. وهذا يتطلب حماسا فى الدراسة وعدم الرضى بأقل من أقصى مجهود, وبذا يجد الممثل ما يساعده على الوصول إلى غاية الكمال.
