لعل شخصية ما من شخصيات معلمي الكنيسة الغربية لم تثر من الإعجاب الذي لا حد له، والنقد الذي لا حد له أيضًا، كما أثارت شخصية أوغسطين لاهوتيًا منقطع النظير، ومدافعًا عنيدًا عن العقيدة المسيحية، وفيلسوفًا، وأخلاقيًا، وفوق هذا كله، يبدو معاصرًا لكل الأجيال وحياً في كل العصور التى تلته. وكان مذهبه يقوم على التوفيق بين المسيحية والأفلاطونية، ويبرهن على وجود الله، ويقول بالإشراق الذى يكشف الحجب، وبالاتحاد الذى يربط العبد بربه، ويرى في الحب، حب اللهوالإنسان، أحسن دافع إلى الخير وحياة الفضيلة، ويقابل بين مدينة الله التى تسوسها الكنيسة والمدينة الأرضية التى يحكمها الملوك والأباطرة. ولهذا المذهب شأن كبير في الفكر المدرسى وفلسفة العصور الوسطى، لم يعرف له مثيل إلا عندما ظهر "توما الأكوينى" بخلاصته اللاهوتيه. فقد كانت مؤلفات أوغسطين بمثابة الينبوع الذى فاضت عنه تيارات متنوعة في الفكر المسيحي.
