تصدى كثير من متبصري المسلمين والفرنجة من أهالي أوربا وغيرها للسياحة لإفادة أبناء جنسهم من أحوال الأمم التي لم تكن على نحو مألوفاتهم وبذلك يحققون معنى سعة أرض الله وكثرة جنود ربك واختلاف ألوان الناس وألسنتهم ويخلدونها في بطون الأوراق لإفادة أمم جميع الآفاق. أما الملوك والسلاطين ففيهم من سافر طمعاً في الاكتشاف ببلاد الله الواسعة الفلا الكثيرة الكلأ والنظر إلى ما فيها من الخيرات وأسباب التمدن والحضارة والمعارف والصنائع إلى غير ذلك من بواعث الخيرات والنجاح ليزداد خبرة ويستعين بها على نقل ما فيها من المحاسن إلى ممالكه كما فعل بطرس الأكبر ملك الروسية وغيره من الملوك والسلاطين.
لذلك صمم السيد الإمام والقرم القمقام السلطان برغش بن سعيد بن سلطان بن الإمام أحمد بن سعيد على مبارحة ملكه الرغيد وتجشم مشقة الأسفار والخروج إلى بلاد أوربا الغنية بكنوز المعارف والصنائع وأسباب الحضارة والعمران ليرى ما فيها مما يستحق نقله إلى بلاده وأن كان ملكه على جانب عظيم من الخصب والعمران فإنه قد شاد فيه حصون الحضارة على أركان العدالة وصارت رعاياه ترتع على مروج الخصب والسلام وتضحك عن ثغر بسام.
غير أن السلطان برغش أعز الله شأنه قد جبل على طبع جليل يشتاق إلى طلب المعالي والفلاح. ومن حسن دأبه الأثيل إذا سمع بمفخرة لم يأل جهداً عن امتطاء سنامها والفوز بنوالها ولهذا عزم على الأسفار والجولان في الأمصار وكتب يقول إلى جلالة فيكتوريا ملكة بريطانية وسلطانة الهند الفخيمة أنه يريد زيارة البلاد الأوربية. فهمشت وبشت جلالة الملكة إلى رؤياه وأرسلت تستقدمه برسالة ودادية فلباها السيد برغش بحسن القبول، وإتمام المأمول.
ولما كنت ممن تشرف بصحبة جلالة السلطان في هذه الرحلة الزهية ورأيت بمرأى العين ما حصل لجلالته من العز والجاه في تلك البلاد السعيدة وسرحت نظري بما فيها من المفتوحات والتحف النفسية التي تتوق إليها العقول وترتاح إلى استماع أخبارها النفوس عولت على جمع ذلك إلى كتاب برأسه سميته: (بتنزيه الأبصار والأفكار في رحلة سلطان زنجبار)
