كوركيس بن حنّا عواد (1326 هـ - 1413 هـ / 1908 - 1992م) من الشخصيات البغدادية المعروفة في العراق، وهو من عائلة آل عواد أحد العوائل المسيحية في الموصل، واستوطنوا بغداد، وكان أخوه ميخائيل عواد يعمل سكرتيرا لمكتب وزير المعارف في العهد الملكي، وأشتهر كوركيس عواد بالعمل الدؤوب وسعة الإطلاع، إضافة إلى التأليف لكثير من المقالات والكتب بما تجود به قريحته من الأفكار يضاف إلى تخلقه بالأخلاق الحسنة والصفات الرفيعة.

يتناول الباحثان "كوركيس عواد" و "مصطفى جواد" في كتابهم هذا أثراً بغدادياً ما يزال قائماً بالدراسة والتحليل وهو (المدرسة المستنصرية) التي تعد أول جامعة في العالمين العربي والإسلامي.
عُرفت هذه المدرسة بـ "المستنصرية" باسم بانيها "المستنصر بالله أبي جعفر المنصور" الخليفة العباسي السابع والثلاثين، الذي دامت خلافته من سنة (1226-1242م).
يعتني الكتاب بكشف الآثار القائمة اليوم للمدرسة المستنصرية ويستقصي أخبارها السالفة منها تسميتها، وسيرة مؤسسها، وموقعها، وتأسيسها، وتخطيطها، وافتتاحها، ومرافقها، وخزانة الكتب فيها، وساعتها، وأوقافها، وكتابها، وزخارفها، ومدرسوها، وشروطها، ووضعها في مختلف العصور وترميمها وصيانتها. كما تضمن الكتاب معلومات عن محدثي المدرسة المستنصرية وناظريها ودار القرآن فيها في نصوص تاريخية غير منشورة. وأخيراً يمكن القول أن الآثار العديدة التي أنشأها العباسيون لم تبقَ على ما كانت عليه أيامهم، لأن عوامل الزمن ويد الإنسان العابثة قد تظافرت جميعاً على محقها وتدميرها فلم يبقَ سوى نزر ضئيل بقي اليوم بحال مشوهة قلقة ولكنه يبقى شاهداً على عصر زاهر ماضٍ تفنن القوم وقتها في تجميل مبانيهم ومغالاتهم في تزيينها وزخرفتها.
