رواية تشدّك حتّى النّهاية، مُشوّقة وحافلة بالأفكار والأسئلة: هل للحرّية من وجود؟ لِمَ على الحبّ دائماً أن يتّخذ من الحرّية خصمه اللّدود؟ من هو هذا الآخر الذي يكون المرض تارة والتّشخيص تارة أخرى؟ أليس قاسياً أن تكبر امرأة في السنّ؟
فلا يعود من حقّها كما لو أنّها أصيبت بإعاقة - أن تختار السّعادة التي يمنحها الحبّ بل التي يمنحها الاختباء في المألوف؟ كما حدث لـ «پول » التي هربت من سجن «روجي» لكنّها سرعان ما اكتشفت أنّها بذلك قد ضحّت بحياتها التي تعرفها.
وروجي المُحاصَرِ بحرّيته، المقيّد على الدّوام بضرورة ممارستها والتّذكير بها، ستمنحه الكاتبة القدر الذي يرضيه منها، سيفعل ما يشاء، متى شاء، لن يحول دون حرّية أحد، لن يفرض نفسه، لن يطالب أحداً بشيء. لن يعِدَ، لن يعاهد.
سيحتاج فقط إلىپول، ستهزمه حاجته إليها. سنرى كأنّنا نشاهدُ فيِلماً كيف أنّ ما ذكرناه كان منذ البدء أوصاف الرّهينة. أمّا سيمون فهو الشابّ الوسيم الذي كان لابدّ أن يظهر في حياة پول كي تثور مرّة معه على روجي ومرّة على نفسها منه.
