تقول الفكرة الأساسية لكتاب "نقد الحرية" بأن الضّعف الإنساني، وفقاً لليفيناس، وكما يعبّر المؤلف عن ذلك في مقدمة الكتاب، يتوجّب فهمه كفضيلة.
إن هذه الأطروحة، التي لا تخلو من إستفزاز، والتي يبدأ الكتاب بها، سيتم الدفاع عنها طيلة فصوله، عبر تتبع تطور العمل الفينومينولوجي لإمانويل ليفيناس؛ من خلال ثلاث مراحل من الحوار النقدي مع هوسرل وهايدغر وسارتر، صُعداً إلى النقطة التي تتجلى فيها الضرورة الأنطولوجية لتجاوز الذات لحريتها، بإعتبارها الشرط الأولى لتحمل الذات لمسؤولياتها الإيتقية.
وكنتيجة لقراءة ليفيناس لنظرية البيذاتية لهوسرل، يمكننا أن نقف على أن الآخر، كوجه يخاطبني، كما يفترض أن نسمّيه، يتوجب النظر إليه بإعتباره يتمتع، هو والذات، بأصلية متزامنة على الأقل.
وبهذا المعنى، فإن الآخر، أياً كان، "ليس موضوعاً للوعي"، بل العكس هو الصحيح، إنه شرط الذاتية نفسها، لأن الذات لا تتكوّن إلا عبر نداء المسؤولية، وفي الفصل الثاني من الكتاب، سيظهر كيف أن إستدلال ليفيناس على الأصلية المتزامنة الأنطولوجية للذات والآخر، إن لم يكن على أسبقية الآخر، من شأنه أن يسحب البساط من تحت كلّ حديث عن "أصالة" ذاتية، ذلك أن علاقتنا بالآخر، يتوجب، وخصوصاً إذا كانت ذاتيتنا هبة هذا الآخر، أن نفهمها كـــ "سلبية"، بحيث أنه يتوجب النظر إلى كل محاولة مسبقة للتحقق الذاتي الأصيل، بإعتبارها أمراً مضللاً.
