هذا الكتاب هو باكورة الكتب الجادة التى تترجم إلى العربية فى تاريخ الموسيقى وبالرغم مما يظهر من حجمه فى صيغته العربية فهو لا يعد من المطولات في تاريخ هذا الفن العويص، لسبب واضح، وهو أن المؤلف العلامة كورت زاكس جمع فيه تاريخ الموسيقى منذ نشأة الإنسان حتى العصر الحاضر، فناً وصناعةً- سواء في ذلك صنعة التأليف أو صناعة الآلات الموسيقية- وترجمة لحياة الموسيقيين واستعرضنا لأعمالهم ويعلو قدح الكتاب ويزداد وزنه في فصوله الخاصة بنشأة الموسيقى بعد انتشار المسيحية في أوربا وتنظيم شئون الكنيسة الرومانية، ثم بالتطور الذي عركته خلال القرون الوسطى وعصر النهضة ونشأة الأوبرا والكانتاتة والأوراتوريو في الفن البوليفوني، ثم تحول البوليفونية إلى المونوفونية، فتزاوج الأثنتين بعد وفاة عظماء البوليفونية، باخ، وهيندل، على أيدي عظماء فينا.
وهنا تتضح فائدة الكتاب المحققة لدارسي الموسيقى عموماً، ولطالبي التزود بفهم أتم لهذه الموضوعات الأساسية، ولإدراك الأصول الحضارية التي نشأ فيها جبابرة الفن الموسيقي ممن تولع بالإستماع إلى مصنفاتهم شتى الأمم عندما تبلغ مرتبة معينة من مراتب الحضارة؛ فالكتاب- في الحق- يحيط إحاطة تامة بمات يوفى بحاجة من ينشد الإلمام الضروري بتاريخ موسيقى الغربيين.
