هذا العنوان يوحي إليك أنك إزاء مصنف لغوي جمع مفردات العربية في نسق معجمي، تبعاً للبنية الصوتية، كما عهدنا في معاجم الألفاظ، لدى العرب وغيرهم من الأمم. بيد أن مضمونه الحقيقي يخالف ما تبادر إلى الذهن، لأن ما ستراه فيه هو طراز آخر من التصنيف، يمثل أقدم ما عرف من "معاجم المعاني" في التاريخ، وأوثق نص في ذلك الميدان.
فبعد أن وضع ابن السكيت مقاييس ضابطة، لحفظ جمهور ألفاظ العربية في كتابه "إصلاح المنطق" ورسخ المعايير التي يصح بها أداء المفردات فصيحة البيان، توجه إلى الإرث اللغوي من زاوية موضوعية، يضع فيها مصنفه "الألفاظ". فقد بسط أمامه ذلك الإرث، واختار له توزيعاً تنتظمه الموضوعات العامة التي تملأ حياة العرب، ثم عرض في كل منها ما كان من الألفاظ والعبارات، تحت عناوين محددة، كالغنى والخصب والتفرق والشجاعة والمياه والدعوات والثياب... مع التفسير والتوضيح والاستدلال، بنصوص من أبلغ البيان.
وبهذا جمع حصيلة ما خلفه رواد البحث اللغوي، في حياة العرب، فنقل إلينا عن أبناء القبائل ورجالات العلم زاداً سائغاً، بأسانيد موثقة وتنسيق دقيق، ييسر المعرفة والخبرة والإمتاع، فكان أن تقبل علماء العربية هذا الصنيع بالتقدير والإجلال، ووظفوه فيما صنّفوا من معاجم المفردات والمعاني، وصار كتابنا هذا رافداً ورائداً وموجهاً للأجيال.
وكذلك كان موقف مشاهير العلماء، إذ تلقوا نسخ "الألفاظ" بالعناية، تفسيراً وتنمية وتوجيهاً ونقداً، في حواش وتعليقات وافرة، زادته غنى وسعة أفق ودقة بيان. وانتقل إلينا كل هذا كاملاَ، في نسخ خطية قديمة موثقة، يسرت للأستاذ الدكتور فخر الدين قباوة أن يكون له شرف تحقيقه وضبطه، في التنسيق والتعليق والتخريج والتوضيح، والإشراف على فهرسته، ولـ"مكتبة ناشرون" فضل إخراجه بوجه مشرق وضاح، توطئه لسرعة الاستفادة من عالم غني بالمعارف، واسع الأفق خصب العطاء.
