التحليل العاملى أسلوب إحصائى يستخدم فى تناول بيانات متعددة ارتبطت فيما بينها بدرجات مختلفة من الإرتباط، لتخلص فى صورة تصنيفات مستقلة قائمة على أسس نوعية للتصنيف. ويتولى الباحث فحص هذه الأسس التصنيفية واستشفاف ما بينها من خصائص مشتركة وفقاً للإطار النظرى والمنطق العلمى الذى بدأ به. ونتيجة لتطور التحليل العاملى واتساع استخدامه فى علم النفس على وجه الخصوص، اعتبر هذا السلوب -خطأ- بمثابة نظرية فى علم النفس، وهو خطأ لا يبدو قاصراً على من يقفون خارج مجال التخصص، بل يتعداهم أحياناً إلى المتخصصين، غير أن هذا الخطأ الذى أصبح منتشراً يجب أن لا يؤدى إلى التشكيك فى أهمية التحليل العاملى باعتباره نموذجاً رياضياً مناسباً لتفسير الكثير من النظريات السيكلوجية سواء فى القدرات الإنسانية أو فى مجال السلوك.
وتعد وظيفة تصنيف البيانات واحدة من أهم مراحل بناء النظرية العلمية، بل إن عدداً من النظريات العلمية يعد فى حقيقته تصنيفاَ للملاحظات والمتغيرات المتعلقة بالظواهر موضوع دراسته، ويؤدى اكتشاف وتحديد أسس التصنيف إلى إقامة الفروض العلمية التى تختبر هذه الأسس، والمتغيرات فى الظاهرة ومنطق هذه المتغيرات وهو ما ننتهى منه إلى صياغة القانون العلمى. وعلى هذا يعد التحليل العاملى أسلوباً مناسباً يستطيع عالم النفس استخدامه فى سعيه نحو حسن تصنيف الظواهر السيكلوجية، والخروج منها بالقوانين الخاصة بهذه الظواهر.
بقى أن نعرف بعد كل هذا، أن التحليل العاملى لا يستطيع تدارك أو علاج الأخطاء الناجمة عن سوء التناول أو عدم الدقة سواء فى القياس أو الضبط. إن تناولا خاطئاً للظواهر لا يصححه أسلوب إحصائى دقيق أو سليم، كما أن نتائجاً صحيحة لأسلوب إحصائى سليم تحتاج قبل كل شىء لباحث مدقق قادر على استخلاص دلالاتها من إطاره النظرى الأساسى وتكوينه العلمى والتراث العريض الذى يتحرك خلاله.
