استأثر ديوان الحماسة باهتمام علماء اللغة ونقدة الشعر فتوالوا على شرحه والوقوف على ما تفردت به لغته الشعرية من نكت وخواص, حتى بلغت شروحه ثلاثة وثلاثين شرحا, وهو ما لم يحظ به ديوان آخر. كل ذلك دعانى إلى أن أقف عند هذا السفر الشعرى الرائع محاولا استيضاح ملامحه الجمالية من خلال دراسة لغته الشعرية.
ونظرا لكثرة أبوابه ولأن بابي الحماسة والرثاء قد درسا من قبل فقد وقع الاختيار على أبواب "الأدب- النسيب- الهجاء", وهى أبواب مختلفة فى الغرض ليكون ذلك أدعى لمعرفة لغة الشعر العربي القديم فى مرحلته الشفاهية, وذلك افضى إلى ظهور صعوبات منها عدم وضوح ملامح الاختلاف والاتفاق بين الأبواب مما استدعى بذل جهد مضاعف فى دراسة ألفاظ الأبواب الثلاثة, كلا على حدة, واقتضى ذلك استخدام الإحصاء الأسلوبى وسيلة منهجية للوصول إلى خصائص لغة شعر الحماسة.وعليه فقد توجب أن تأتي الدراسة فى تمهيد وثلاثة فصول وخاتمة, أما التمهيد فقد كان فى خصائص التجربة الشعرية للأبواب وفى مفهوم لغة الشعر.
وكان الفصل الأول لدراسة الألفاظ بوصفها البنية الأولى للغة الشعرية وقد قسم ثلاثة مباحث: الأول: للألفاظ فى باب الأدب, والثانى: للألفاظ فى النسيب, والثالث: للألفاظ فى باب الهجاء لبيان مدى الاتفاق والاختلاف فى لغتها الشعرية. وجاء الفصل الثانى لدراسة الصياغة الشعرية. وخصصت الخاتمة لنتائج الدراسة. وقد تم الاعتماد على رواية المرزوقى للحماسة وشرحه (لكونه أوفى الشروح) مع استضاءة بشرح التبريزي وشرح الأعلم وراوية الجواليقي.
