في 9 تشرين الأول 1967، أغتيل أرنستو تشي غيفارا في قرية لاهيغيراس La higueras (بوليفيا) على يد الجنود الذين أسروه. في تموز 1968، نشر فرنسوا ماسبيرو الترجمة الفرنسية ليومياته في بوليفيا، حيث يروي تشي، يوماً بيوم، المسيرة الطويلة ومعارك مجموعة المغاورين الذين قادهم خلال أحد عشر شهراً في الجبال البوليفية.
منذ ذلك الحين، أخذت شخصية تشي، كما هو معروف، أبعاد الأسطورة في أميركا اللاتينية كما في العالم أجمع. أسطورة بقيت حية أكثر من ربع قرن، لكنها تبدلت كثيراً على مر السنوات، بحيث إنها لم يعد لها سوى صلة بعيدة بالواقع.
هنا تكمن الفائدة من قراءة يوميات تشي في بوليفيا مرة جديدة. لأنه لا يمكن أن يتحول تشي إلى مجرد رمز للثورة والإلتزام: فنحن نكتشف في هذه الصفحات أفضل مما في معظم كتاباته الأخرى، نقاط ضعفه وتناقضاته، وندرك بشكل أعمق الشجاعة والتصميم اللذين عرف كيف يبديهما.
إن هذه الطبعة هي طبعة 1968، ذاتها، بعد أن استكملت بالأيام الثلاثة عشر الناقصة في الطبعة الأولى وأضيف إليها نص رسالة تشي إلى مؤتمر القارات الثلاث عام 1967، "اخلقوا فيتنامين، ثلاثاُ... عدة فيتنامات، هذا هو الشعار".
كما أضيف إليها، مقدمة غير منشورة، لفرنسوا ماسبيرو، تعطي مجدداً، كل بعدها التاريخي، لمعركة وأفكار، ذلك الذي كان أحد زعماء الثورة الكوبية.
