ويتتبع فابياني أيضاً التغييرات التي شهدها هذا الإختصاص في الخطاب والممارسات طوال قرن من الزمن، طارحاً على نفسه - بصفته عالم إجتماع متخصصاً في الحياة الإجتماعية للمعارف والأفكار - السؤال التالي: هل أنه بالإمكان مقاربة الفلسفة بأدوات علم الإجتماع؟ وكيف يمكن مقاربتها شأنها شأن أي نشاط إجتماعي أو ثقافي؟.
في خلفية السؤال أن الفلاسفة كانوا منذ فترة طويلة يرفضون محاولات المؤرخين وعلماء الإجتماع توسيع نطاق الإستجواب؛ الأمور مختلفة اليوم ويمكن أن نقترح طريقة أخرى لكتابة تاريخ الفلسفة، تحفظ الإحترام للمفاهيم وتحرص في الوقت ذاته على الكشف عن حياتها الإجتماعية من خلال أساليب وجود كتب الفلسفة، والأجهزة المؤسسية التي تثبّت هذا الإختصاص في العالم الإجتماعي، كما تحرص على تبيان إنخراط الفلاسفة في منازعات عصرهم.
والقصد من ذلك الأمر هو التفكير في وحدة الممارسة الثقافية على مرّ الزمن، وفسح المجال في الوقت عينه أمام تظهير ما ينشأ من تجديد ومن إنقطاعات أيضاً طوال المسار.
