"تقرير الحالة الحاضرة لمصر" يدخل في نمط أدب الرحلات, لكن المؤلف هنا بدلاً من ذكر مواد كتابه حسب التسلسل الزمني, كما يفعل أكثر الرحالة, قسم كتابه إلي خمسة أجزاء متفاوتة الحجم والأهمية وهي عبارة عن خمس لوحات يصور فيها مشاهداته وأنطبعاته.
وقد تفرد المؤلف بعرضه حال الكنيسة القبطية؛ حيث لم يتطرف مثله أي رحالة غربي من قبله أو من بعده لحالة أقباط مصر, إنه يعرض هذه الحالة لا عن سماع, أو نقل عن مؤلفين سابقين, بل عن مشاهدة ومعايشة وصداقة للبطريرك ولبعض الأقباط, وهي صداقة ستتوطد في الرحلة الثانية وتمتد لتشمل أساقفة وكهنة ورهباناً.
