إن المقالة الذاتية وعلى الرغم مما قدمته من العطاء والتأثير، فقد أعوزتها الدراسة الجادة التي تخصها بالنقد والتحليل، والإلمام الواعي الذي يؤصلها ويقدم صورة متكاملة لنشأتها وتطورها وخصائصها واتجاهاتها الموضوعية وأساليبها الفنية، ومن هذا المنطلق جاءت هذه الدراسة وموضوعها (فن المقالة الذاتية في الأدب العربي الحديث). وقد عنيت بالمقالة الذاتية دون المقالة الموضوعية تركيزًا للجهد وتعميقًا للرؤية، وتنقيبًا عن الاهتمامات الأدبية والفنية التي توفرت للمقالة الذاتية وخلت منها المقالة الموضوعية التي تدور اهتماماتها حول تجلية موضوعها تجلية عقلية باستخدام الأسلوب العلمي والمنطقي الذي يحفظ للموضوع حدوده وقضاياه وحقائقه بعيدًا عن شخصية كاتبه ودون أن تطغى أحلامه وعوطفه على موضوعه.
وقد اهتمت الدراسة بنتاج النصف الأول من القرن العشرين لأن هذه الفترة قد شهدت اكتمال الملامح الفنية للمقالة الذاتية، وتعددت مظاهر رقيها وازدهارها حتى فرضت سلطانها حيث كانت طوال تلك الفترة الفن الأدبي الأول الذي يتنافس فيه الأدباء، والميدان الفسيح الذي يتسابق فيه الكتاب، فحققت المقالة الذاتية- آنذاك- عصرها الذهبي في ظل الصحافة الحزبية.
