يتمحور عملي في هذا الكتاب حول السؤال، لماذا الحجاب؟ ماذا يحمل الحجاب حتى يكون موضع خلاف ورمزا لشيء لا يحتمل؟ قدمت في هذا السياق أجوبة بسيطة من قبل السياسيين الذين عملوا على تمرير القوانين، ومن دعمهم من المنشغلين بمجال البحث النسائي. واتفق هؤلاء على أن الحجاب رمز للسياسيين الإسلاميين الراديكاليين. وبتعبير الأسقف الأسترالي براونين Brownyn ، «لقد أصبح الحجاب أيقونة ورمزا لاصطدام ، ويتجاوز بكثير كونه قطعة ثوب». وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، تم الاستدلال، على نطاق واسع، أن الحجاب يرمز إلى قمع النساء. وأكدت على ذلك ماركريت دي كوبر في قولها «عاشت النساء بملابس وأعراف فرضها الرجال، ولذلك كان منع الحجاب انتصارا». لا تضعنا هذه الأجوبة أمام الصورة الحقيقية. ذلك أن ارتداء الحجاب ينحصر في طبقة محدودة من المسلمات، وتبقى الأغلبية الساحقة مندمجة بطريقة أو بأخرى في نظام القيم واللباس بالدول الغربية التي يقيمون بها. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، لا يعتبر الحجاب العلامة البارزة المميزة التي ترتبط بديانة المسلمين، ولا الطريقة الوحيدة التي يمكن من خلالها إعلان الهوية الدينية والسياسية.
