إن الدولة الانكليزية لما تسلطت على مملكة الهند تسلطًا قويًا، وبسطوا بساط الأمن والانتظام بسطًا مرضيًا، ومن ابتداء سلطنتهم إلى ثلاث وأربعين سنة، ما ظهرت الدعوة من علمائهم إلى مذهبهم، وبعدها أخذوا في الدعوة وكانوا يتدرجون فيها، حتى ألفوا الرسائل والكتب في رد أهل الإسلام، وشوارع العامة وكان عوام أهل الإسلام إلى مدة متنفرين عن استماع وعظهم ومطالعة رسائلهم، فلم يلتفت أحد من علماء الهند إلى رد تلك الرسائل، لكن تطرق الوهن بعد مدة، في تنفر بعض العوام، فعند ذلك توجه بعض علماء أهل الإسلام إلى ردهم، وما كنت معدودًا في زمرة العلماء الفحول، ولم أكن أهلًا لهذا الخطب العظيم الشأن، لكني لما اطلعت على تقريراتهم، وتحريراتهم، ووصلت إلي رسائل كثيرة من مؤلفاتهم، استحسنت أن أجتهد أيضًا، بقدر الوسع والإمكان، فألفت أولًا الكتب والرسائل، ليظهر الحال لأولي الألباب، واستدعيت ثانيًا من القسيس الذي كان بارعًا وأعلى كعبًا من العلماء المسيحيين الذين كانوا في الهند مشتغلين بالطعن والجرح على الملة الإسلامية، تحريرًا وتقريرًا، فتقررت المناظرة في المسائل الخمس التي هي أمهات المسائل المتنازعة بين المسيحيين والمسلمين أعني: التحريف، والنسخ، والتثليث، وحقية القرآن، ونبوة محمد "صلى الله عليه وسلم".
فظهرت الغلبة لنا بفضل الله في مسألتي النسخ والتحريف اللتين كانتا من أدق المسائل وأقدمها في زعم القسيس، كما تدل عليه عبارته في كتاب حل الإشكال، فلما رأى ذلك سد باب المناظرة في المسائل الثلاث الباقية. ثم وقع لي الاتفاق أن وصلت إلى مكة شرفها الله تعالى وحضرت عتبة الأستاذ العلامة السيد أحمد بن زيني دحلان، أدام الله فيضه إلى يوم القيامة، فأمرني أن أترجم باللسان العربي هذه المباحث الخمسة من الكتب التي ألفتها في هذا الباب، لأنها كانت إما بلسان الفرس، وإما بلسان مسلمي الهند.
