هذه الرسالة أجمع مؤرخو الكنيسة وقد يسوها أن كاتبها القديس بطرس الرسول. والقديس إيريناوس هو أول من إقتبس منها ذاكرا إسم الرسول بطرس غير أننا نجد مقتطفات منها او ما يناظرها في كتابات آباء سابقين له من القرن الأول وأيضا آباء لاحقين مثلما جاء في رسالة برنابا، وكتابات أكليمنضس أسقف روما. وكتاب الراعي لهرماس وكتابات القديس بوليكربوس الشهيد أشار إليها القديس أكليمنضس الإسكندري والعلامة ترتليان كما ذكر المؤرخ يوسابيوس أن رسالة بطرس الرسول من الكتب التي تقبلتها الكنيسة دون أدنى شك. تتفق الرسال مع أسلوب عظات الرسول الواردة في سفر الاعمال.
