مؤلف هذا الكتاب هو، علي بن محمد بن علي بن عبد الرحمن بن عراق الكناني، ولد في دمشق سنة 907هـ، ثم رحل إلى الحجاز وولي خطابة المسجد النبوي، له كتاب جمع فيه بين موضوعات ابن الجوزي والسيوطي ورتبه على ترتيبهما، وأهداه إلى السلطان سليمان خان، سماه الشريعة المرفوعة عن الأخبار الشنيعة الموضوعة. وقد أتاحت له رحلته إلى الحجاز واستقراره بالمدينة المنورة أن يشارك المؤرخين هناك اهتماماتهم، فاتجه بنظره إلى الطائف، فكتب عنها كتابه "نشر اللطائف في قطر الطائف" وهو هذا الذي نقدم له اليوم، ويكاد منهجه يتفق في كثير من الأحيان مع المنهج الذي اتبعه جار الله ابن فهد في كتاباته عن الطائف، فقد سار ابن عراق على هذا النهج، فكتب عن فضل الطائف، وعن سبب تسميتها بذلك، وعن فضل حرم وج، كما تناول فضائل ابن عباس وابن الحنفية، وهي الأمور التي تناولها جار الله ابن فهد بالتفصيل تحت هذا العنوان في كتاباته، حيث تناول جار الله أخبار وج والطائف، وفضائل ابن عباس، وكذلك فضائل ابن الحنفية.
