إن إهتمام القبائل بالأنساب في قلب جزيرة العرب التي تعتزُ بأنسابها وتحافظ عليها، إلا أن الإتجاه لتدوينها قد توقف منذ القرن الثالث الهجري بالنسبة لسكان الجزيرة العربية ولهذا أصبح الإهتمام بها مقتصراً على الحفظ حيث يتناقل الأبناء والأحفاد أنساب أُسرهُم ممن سبقهم، ومعروف أن الذاكرة عرضة للضعف وللنسيان، كما أن تسلسل الأنساب طيلة قرون من الصعب على كل ذاكرة إختزانه وحفظه.
من الملاحظ أن سلسلة النسب التي تتخطّى الجدّ الخامس أو الجدّ السادس تكون محل شك؛ فمن النسّابين من يذكر ذلك التسلسل ومنهم من يهمله؛ لكنهم يجمعون على أن قاعدة النسب هي التأكد من تحديد القبيلة ووصل النسب بها بالإستفاظة؛ كتاب "قبيلة بني غانم الهلالية" الذي بين يديك أيها القارئ الكريم يُعدّ من الكتب المهمّة.
