تروي هذه الرواية قصة أربعة عصابيين يسجنون 42 ضحية في قلعة ويجرون عليهم شتى طرق التعذيب الجنسية، والرواية كانت موضوع آخر فيلم للمخرج الايطالي باولو باسوليني. وقد أعاد صياغتها دي ساد عندما نقل إلى السجن الباستيل سنة 1784.في هذه الرواية يتخيل المركيز دو ساد جماعة من الخُلعاء المتحدين عبر شبكة علاقات سفاحية، منذ أكثر من ستة أعوام، وكان هؤلاء الفساق الأربعة المُتطابقون بثرائهم (حيازتهم على الذهب) وذوقهم (شتى أنواع الانحرافات الجنسية)، يتخيّلون تقوية علاقاتهم أكثر عن طريق التحالفات التي يحتلُّ فيها الفجور موقعاً أكبر من أيّ دافع آخر، أي الدوافع التي تُؤسس عليها العلاقات عادة.
ففي فلسفة دو ساد إن البشر مُجرد آلاتٍ تتملصُ من المسؤولية الأخلاقية، وطالما لا توجد حياةٌ أخرى، فإن سلوككَ غيرُ مُهم، سواء كُنت مُنحرفاً، أو فاسِداً. وهو يعتقد أن الفردُ ولد وحدهُ، وهو المُهم فقط، لا وجود إلا لدوافِعه الأنانية، ومن دون أية التزامات لأحد. وإن الإنسان يميلُ بطبيعته إلى الهيمنة، وإلحاق الألم بالآخرين، وهذا ما يُمتعه، لذلك لا يعد الناس العاديين إلاَّ كائنات نَفعية، لُعبة بيد الأثرياء، الأقوياء. أما الجمال بالنسبة له فهو مُلهم للقسوة، والتصرفاتِ الشيطانية. لذا فهو يجعل المُتعة تتناسبُ طردياً مع القسوة كي تنتج الإثارة، وفي النتيجة فإن التطرّف، والقسوة هما مسارُ البشرية الصحيح.
