كانت "هيلين ليفنجستون" عالمة الأسماك تقوم بتحضير دبلوم في جامعة "ميتشجيان" وبعد ستة أشهر من الإطلاع على شهادات صائدي الحيتان، والجرائد البحرية توصلت إلى أن سمكة الـ"في دي بيلي" ذات الخياشيم المذهبة -والتي يعتقد أنها أسطورية- قد تواجدت بالفعل. وبعد أبحاث مضنية تمكنت "هيلين" من تحديد أماكن تواجد هذه السمكة في مغارتين تعرفان بـ"عيون الزمرد" تقعان على جزيرة "كايوي" وهما ملك لعائلة "موأوكيني"، فقررت الرحيل إلى هناك بصحبة صديقتها "أولجت"، حتى تحصل على ترخيص من أصحاب المغارتين لتبدأ البحث عن السمكة الأسطورية. وهناك تلتقي بـ"كان ماكتافيش" أحد أفراد العائلة المالكة للمغارتين والذي اشتهر بعشقه للسيدات. يحاول "كان" أن يتقرب لـ"هيلين" وينجح في ذلك حيث تربطهما علاقة حب قوية نتيجة لأحداث مختلفة ومتنوعة أثناء رحلة البحث عن السمكة الذهبية في "‘يون الزمرد".
