كتابنا هذا هو كتاب مختارات شعرية اختارها مؤلفه من نوادر الشعراء الذين أدرك زمانهم وقرأ عليهم دواوينهم، متجنباً الشائع الذائع. وأضاف إليها بعض نوادر الشعراء المتقدمين ممن عاشوا في القرنين الثالث والرابع الهجريين، وألحق به مختارات من شعره على وفق أبوابه. وكتابنا هذا له شأن كبير في بابه، ذلك أنه يضيف إلى ديوان الشعر العربي إضافة ذات بال، فكثير من الشعراء الذين اختار المؤلف لهم غير معروفين أصلاً، وحتى المعروفين منهم أورد لهم أشعارً نادرة لا وجود لها في مظان تراجمهم. كما أضاف جديداً إلى دواوين شعراء طبعت دواوينهم أمثال أبي فنن وأبزون العماني والأبيوري والباخرزي وغيرهم.
ثم إن هذا الكتاب يقدم مجموعة منتقاة من شعر مؤلفه تصلح أن تكون نواة لصنع ديوانه الضائع. وثمة فصول نثرية بليغة أوردها المصنف في الباب الثاني عشر من كتابه ونسبها إلى بعض الكتاب البلغاء، أضافت هي الأخرى جديداً إلى آثارهم. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب، وللمكانة التي يحتلها مصنفه، عُني بتذييله بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم فيه وما أشكل.
