عملية مضغ الطعام وشرب السوائل عند الأطفال المصابين بالشلل الدماغي تكون بعض الأحيان عادية مثلها مثل عند أي طفل آخر، إلا أنه في أحيان كثيرة تكون مشكلة جدية تسبب أذى للطفل بسبب تسرب السوائل وفتات الطعام إلى الرئة، وفي أحيان أخرى تكون عملية مضغ الطعام بطيئة جداً وتشكل هاجساً يومياً لأسرة الطفل المصاب، وغالباً ما تكون صعوبة المضغ أو البلع هي السبب في سوء التغذية المنتشرة عند الأطفال المصابين بالشلل الدماغي بسبب عدم تناول الطفل كمية الطعام المناسبة أو اقتصار الطعام على نوع واحد يلجأ له العل بسبب سهولة مضغه وبلعه عند طفلهم المصاب (الأكل المطحون أو المهووس على سبيل المثال). الجانب الآخر في هذا الأمر هو أن تدريب أو تحسين المهارات الحركية لأعضاء التجديف الغني عند عملية الأكل يعتبر أساسياً في تطوير مهارة الكلام ونطق الأصوات فيما بعد. وموضوع.
