الهندوسية من أقدم ديانات العالم. تعرف في الهند بالديانة الأزلية، ساناتانا دهارما، أي الديانة التي لا عمر لها. وهي تضم جملة من المعتقدات والمأثورات التي تعترف بسلطة نصوص الفيدا، والتي تتراوح في تعبيراتها الروحية بين التشدد في الزهد والإغراق في الحسية, بين عبادة إله معين وقمة التجريد الفلسفي, بين عبادة الصور التي ترمز الى الآلهة العديدة والقول بوحدة الوجود. وغاية ما تطمح إليه الهندوسية, على اختلاف مدارسها ومناهجها, هو تحقيق تحرر الإنسان. والتحرر لا يعني أن يكون الإنسان حراً في تصرفاته وأفعاله بشكل مطلق, بل أن يكون حراً من قيود المادة وشروطها, وقادراً على تحقيق ماهيته الروحية الأعمق, والتوصل الى الخلاص والانعتاق من دورة الولادات والميتات. تتألف الهندوسية من بنيان عظيم من الأفكار المترابطة التي تبحث في علاقة الذات مع الوجود, والقوى المحركة للطبيعة, وثنائيات الخير والشر, والثواب والعقاب, والولادة والموت, والوهم والحقيقة. وهي تجمع بين الطابعين العملي والنظري. إذ نشأت أساساً من تأمل الحكماء في طبيعة الحياة وجوهرها, ومحاولتهم التغلب على صعوبات الوجود ومشاكله. وتقدم في هذا الخصوص منهجاً فريداً يستند الى مبدأ تفحص الذات. فهي تعلم أن الإنسان الذي يشعر بالألم والإحباط لفشله في إشباع رغباته يتخلص من شعوره هذا بانتصاره عليها, وأنه بتجاوزه لمحدودياته وأخطائه ونواقصه ينتقل الى مستوى أعلى من الوعي ليتحد بالوعي الكلي. ومن أجل ذلك عليه أن يسلك الطرق والمناهج التي وضعت لتساعده في ارتقائه, أي الدين والأخلاق والمعرفة والعمل والفن والفلسفة والزهد (اليوغا). وسيتحقق ارتقاؤه وتحرره عبر سلسلة من التجسدات المتتالية التي تجتازها الروح.
