علم نفس النمو هو احد فروع علم النفس الذي يهتم بدراسة التغيرات التي تطرا على سلوك الفرد من بدء خلقه وحتى مماته. ويرتبط علم نفس النمو بشكل او باخر مع علم النفس، وعلم الاجتماع، والانثروبولوجيا وعلم الاجنة، وعلم الوراثة، وعلم الطب. حيث حاول علماء النفس الوقوف امام ظاهرة النمو الانساني والمتغيرات التي ترتبط به ليفرز علما قائما بذاته من اجل الاجابة عن كل التساؤلات التي يبحث القارئ عن اجابات محددة لها. وينطلق الاهتمام بمراحل تطور الانسان ونموه، خاصة ما يرتبط منها بمراحل الطفولة من منطلقات عديدة: حب الاطفال والعطف عليهم والشعور بالبشاشة في وجودهم ووجودهم جزء من الطبيعة السوية للكائن الحي، تاكيد الدين الاسلامي الحنيف عاطفة حب الاطفال وجعلها سبيلا الى اشباع دوافع الابوة والاموة واشار الى ان حب الاولاد من اقوى الدوافع الانسانية( البعد الديني )، يعتبر الاهتمام بالطفولة في عصرنا الحاضر من اهم المعايير التي يقاس بها تقدم المجتمع وتطوره وتحضره بين غيره من المجتمعات ( البعد الاجتماعي الاقتصادي الحضاري )، ان الاهتمام بمراحل نمو الطفل وبمظاهر هذا النمو وخصائصه ومطالبه في تلك المراحل يعتبر امرا ضروريا لسلامة العملية التربوية ( البعد التربوي ) وسيرها نحو تحقيق اهدافها. اما اسباب دراسة علم النفس فيعود لسببين هما: اولا: الحاجة الى حل مشكلات الانسان العملية التطبيقية، وثانيا: الصعوبات المنهجية في دراسة بعض مراحل النمو.
