Book Description
Railways in the Middle East 1856-1948 deals with the various railway system as they developed historically, geographically, economically, and polotically. Although railway building had begun as a purely economic project, it soon turned into a bone of contention among the European powers as a result of their political and economic rivalry; for their financial and technical involvement was subject to their political ambitions.
In the ottoman Empire, the various railway systems - Baghdad, Damascus, Hama, and Extensions, Hijaz - formed part of a whole. In Eygpt and the Sudan, railways were state-owned from the beginning. With the break-up of the Ottoman Empire, the railway systems were fragmented and bought by the emerging states of the area. With the exception of Egypt and the Sudan, however, they were superseded by the development of road networks.
