بعد فقدان كثيرٍ من الأُسر السورية اللاجئة مُعيلها التقليدي تحت وطأة الحرب القائمة، ألقيت مهمة إعالة تلك الأسر على كواهل النساء، واللواتي لجأن إلى أنماطٍ مختلفة من آليات التكيّف الإقتصادي للوفاء بإحتياجات أسرهنّ.
يتمحور السؤال المركزي للدراسة في هذا الكتاب حول كيفيّة قيامهن بذلك في مدينة إسطنبول، فيما يبحث السؤالان الفرعيان ماهية أنماط تكيّفهن، والعوامل المؤثّرة فيه.
ويسعى الكتاب إلى إزالة الضبابية التي تكتنف ملامح حياة اللاجئين الحضريين، ولا سيما الفئات الضعيفة منهم، بهدف الإستفادة من الدروس المستخلصة في تصميم التدخّلات الإنسانية.
يُقدّم الكتاب نظرةً أوليّة في الظاهرة من خلال ثلاثة محاور تحليلية، الأول يدور حول اللاجئات الحضريات المُعيلات، والثاني يتناول سبل العيش لدى اللاجئين الحضريين وآليات تكيّفهم، أما المحور الثالث فيدور حول سياق اللجوء السوري في إسطنبول؛ وذلك بالإرتكاز في الجانب النظري على نظريّة التكيّف وبعض نظريات الجندر، إضافةً إلى منظومة سبل العيش المستدامة، بعدها ينتقل الكتاب إلى ميدان الدراسة، إذ إنّه مبنيٌّ على دراسة كيفيّة، تستند إلى 15 مقابلة شخصيّة، ومجموعة بؤريّة واحدة.
يستنتج الكتاب أن آليات التكيف الإقتصادي التي تتبعها اللاجئات السوريات المعيلات في إسطنبول تندرج تحت ثلاثة أنماطٍ رئيسية، هي: نمط التكيف المُنتِج، ونمط التكيّف بالإعتماد على المساعدات، ونمط التكيّف السلبي، كما تؤثّر في قدرة اللاجئة على التكيّف - إيجاباً أو سلباً - وفي نمط الآليات التي تنزع إليها ثلاثةُ أنواعٍ من العوامل: النوع الأول مُتعلّقٌ بالجندر، والنوع الثاني يتعلّقُ باللاجئة نفسها، فيما يتعلّق النوع الثالث بسياق اللجوء في إسطنبول، والمُرتبط بسُبُل العيش.
