تتضمن هذه المجموعة المختارة من مقتنيات متحف ((فيكتوريا وألبرت)) لوحات نادرة التقطها عدد من الفنانين للإمبراطورية العثمانية الشاسعة. فمنذ البداية المتواضعة في الأناضول عام 1308 على يد الأمير التركي عثمان، أدت سلسلة من الحروب والتحالفات إلى ولادة إمبراطورية معقدة امتدت من حدود المغرب إلى إيران، ومن القوقاز والخليج العربي إلى بوابات فيينا. وفي ذروة صعود هذه الإمبراطورية في 1683 شكلت تهديدا حقيقيا لأوروبا، ولكن بعد أن تقلصت مناطق نفوذ العثمانيين وانتشارهم منذ ذلك الحين، تحولوا بالنسبة إلى الغرب من مصدر تهديد إلى مصدر فضول. وقد انجذبت أجيال متعاقبة من الرحالة الأوروبيين من المستكشفين والتجار والسياح والعلماء والفنانين وحتى رسامي الكاريكاتور السياسي، إلى هذه الأراضي، وخلفوا وراءهم سجلات عن مشاهداتهم هناك. كان ثمة تعطش لمعرفة الشرق الأوسط، والتعرف من كثب على ثقافة أخرى مليئة بالعوالم الإكزوتيكية. وقد كان عدد من الفنانين البريطانيين البارزين من أوائل الذين سجلوا هذه المشاهدات –ومنهم دافيد روبرتس، إدوار لير، جون فرديرك لويس وأوين جونز – ولكن كان هناك أيضا الكثير من الفنانين المجهولين أو غير المشهورين. وتميط لوحاتهم ورسوماتهم وتصاويرهم جميعا اللثام عن عالم طواه النسيان إلى حد كبير.
