قد يكون من التعسف العلمي أن نتلمس مميزات من شأنها أن تضفي على قارة ما خصائص تنفرد بها دون سائر القارات الأخرى، ذلك لأن تقسيم اليابس إلى قارات مختلفة انما هو تقليد لا يقوم في أكثر الأحيان إلا على محض الاصطلاح التاريخي، ولكن إذا جاز لنا أن نبحث عن طابع مميز لكل قارة فقد تبدو قارة أفريقية في مقدمة القارات التي لا يعوزها توافر مميزات فريدة سواء في ظروفها الطبيعية في البشرية، فقد ميزتها العزلة، ذلك لأنه إذا غضضنا النظر عن قربها من العالم القديم في أوراسيا في الشمال والشمال الشرقي، ألفينا سواحلها الجنوبية والغربية بصفة خاصة وقد نأت عن العالم الجديد في غربها فظلت هذه الجهات مجهولة غير مطروقة فترة طويلة، وهذه القارة هي التي كانت موضوع هذا الجزء بالإضافة إلى قارة أخرى هي قارة أستراليا.
